Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a central pillar of the national economy. In 2019, the scale of Jiangsu's digital economy exceeded 4 trillion CNY, of which the output of electronics industry and software industry reached 2.5 trillion CNY and 950 billion CNY respectively. The scale of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) industry has exceeded 600 billion CNY and 70 billion CNY respectively. The ICT industry has become the core driving force of Jiangsu's economic growth.

JITRI has actively responded to the national strategic plan of "new infrastructure", focusing on R&D in the field of new generation of communications network, AI, third-generation semiconductor and large-scale chips. As of 2021, JITRI has established 15 specialized research institutes in the ICT field, recruited 30 project managers to work on start-up projects, and established 30 JITRI-enterprise joint innovation centers with leading companies in subdivided fields to collect technical needs.

Advanced Materials

While Jiangsu is a leading province in materials manufacturing, it also has a high demand for new and advanced materials. The total output of the materials industry in Jiangsu has exceeded one trillion CNY since years ago, which accounts for more than 50% of the Yangtze Delta region’s total. Jiangsu's materials industry has a leading position in China in terms of technology advancement and comparative strength. It has formed industrial clusters in the fields of carbon fiber (and its composites), nanomaterials, materials for ICT, high-end metal materials, polymer materials, etc.

Focusing on the national strategic needs in the field of advanced materials, JITRI has built a number of specialized research institutes and implemented key projects (start-up companies) in the fields of high-end metal materials, advanced polymer materials, carbon fiber and its composites, functional materials for ICT, materials for the energy sector, etc. It has built joint innovation center with a number of leading enterprises. JITRI focuses on R&D, design, manufacturing and engineering of advanced materials, which aims to support national strategic industries and major constructions.

Manufacturing & Equipment

Jiangsu’s manufacturing industry holds a leading position in China and around the world. The total output of manufacturing industry in Jiangsu province exceeded 16 trillion CNY in 2020, accounting for around 1/8 of the country’s total and 3% of the world. The pillar industries in Jiangsu are electronics, telecommunications, chemicals, machinery and equipment, automobiles manufacturing and metallurgy.

Jiangsu produces nearly 800 kinds of major equipment and key components with independent IPs, which has filled the domestic gap and reached international level. Its production of high-end all terrain cranes, overhead working trucks, rail transit equipment (such as urban rail transit and EMU traction braking system), AC motors and optical cables rank first in China. It’s production of solid waste treatment equipment, CNC metal forming machine tools and metal cutting tools accounted for 45%, 41% and 75% of the national total respectively.

Energy & Environmental Protection

Jiangsu is the birthplace of China's energy conservation and environmental protection industry, with the largest industrial scale in the country. In the past decade, the average annual growth rate of the industry was more than 10%. In recent years, Jiangsu has made great efforts to build a green, low-carbon, clean and efficient energy system. At present, Jiangsu accounts for about 70% of the total installed capacity of offshore wind power in China. It is the province with the largest and most advanced PV industry and power cell industry in China.

Focusing on the national strategy and industrial demand, JITRI has established a number of specialized research institutes in the fields of water treatment, catalytic technology and materials for environmental protection. In the next three years, JITRI plans to establish new institutes focusing on “Energy Internet”. The four main focusing areas are: renewable energy, energy storage, power grid and energy information technology. JITRI aims to integrate interdisciplinary technologies systematically, which will provide perfect industry solutions for the future energy industry.
